Pilates’ Method Training

Josef Hubertus Pilates – History

J.H. PilatesJosef (Joseph) H. Pilates was born in Germany in 1880; he died in New York in 1967. He developed a fitness regime bearing his name, and successfully used it to overcome his disabilities as a frail and sickly child. Pilates devised a series of controlled movements that engage the mind and body in developing strong, flexible muscles, without building bulk. Emphasis was placed on developing deep torso strength and flexibility known as "centering" to ensure proper posture and reduced risk of injury. The lithe musculature and ease of movement possessed by a cat was an image he used to illustrate the technique's objectives. Pilates’ method places a lot of emphasis on correct posture and technique, and doesn't rely upon high numbers of repetitive exercises.

Pilates’ method of exercise has been very popular with dancers since the 1940s but it is now becoming much better known. Today his followers include dancers, athletes, physiotherapists, fitness trainers, health care providers and other professionals who appreciate the significant role exercise plays in restoring and maintaining good health.

The ShapeShift Pilates Studio Approach

Nancy F. Coleman founded ShapeShift Studio in 1987. She was introduced to the Pilates Method as a way to strengthen individuals, not just on the physical level, but also on the emotional and mental levels. She received her Masters' Degree in Psychology in 1984. It was her belief that strengthening the body would lead to physical and emotional well-being. "The body is our foundation. When the body is strong and toned, pain-free and supple, you have a lot more options in your life. You not only look confident but you feel more confident to venture out into new activities. As we age, there is no reason to feel ‘old’. I have always said that Pilates' Method is a youthing process. You can feel younger, look younger and reverse many of the imbalances you have acquired from poor movement patterns, over-use and even ‘one-sided activities’ such as golf or tennis", states Coleman.

In 1999 Nancy's partner Charlotte Hume opened a new studio in Palos Verdes in Rolling Hills Estates carrying on the "Pilates Will Change Your Life" tradition.
