Who Should Learn Pilates’ Method?

Joseph Pilates’ Method is being described by many experts and professionals as "the perfect exercise system". Why is Pilates’ Method considered perfect by enthusiasts. It is universally attractive to many classes of people and situations, such as:

People needing rehabilitation: Every human body has imbalances that can be aligned through The Method. In some cases, those imbalances or problems caused from injury may need exercise rehabilitation. The Method is different from most physical therapy because it strengthens the entire body, not just the injured or imbalanced area. In the early 1900's, famous choreographers sent their ballet dancers to Joseph Pilates for rehabilitation from their injuries. They discovered that the downtime from an injury was less than half resulting from the continued overall body conditioning. This regime is the same for the lay person who may need rehabilitation from Scoliosis, tight neck, low back pain, knock knees and more.

Athletes: Athletes love Pilates’ Method. We have worked with Athletes whose progress in their sport or art has been hampered by tight muscles, injuries, or simply needing to be strengthened in a new way. Body builders love Pilates’ Method. They are always amazed that even with lighter weights they can fatigue their muscles.

People with Chronic Tension: People with chronic tension love Pilates’ Method. We tell our clients, "A tight muscle is a weak muscle". This is a simple concept, but extremely profound. As they begin to understand that opening and lengthening their bodies will help the body release tension and as it releases the tension and gains more flexibility it truly strengthens. Did you know that injury mainly occurs when the muscle has lost it's flexibility or suppleness?

Those with Poor Posture: Many people including our youth may have bad posture. The problem with body posture is that the body is thrown out of alignment resulting in pressure on joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles in ways that may cause chronic problems. As we use The Method to improve the posture, not only does corrected alignment improve associated problems but the person looks tall and long, slimmer and more confident. Standing up straight and tall can completely change one's appearance leading them to strive for better health.

Small Muscle Groups vs. Large Muscle Groups: The Method focuses on working and strengthening the small muscle groups, the intrinsic muscles, first. These small support muscles are the ones responsible for the core support of the body. Most strengthening programs work primarily on the large muscle groups. The small muscles must be strengthened first to change the placement of the bones - the framework of the body. As these muscles strengthen, impinged nerves, muscles and bones release from being crammed together to a freedom in their range of motion.

Taking Responsibility for Your Future: The Method gives us a way to train you for your future. As we move on in years, we acquire the notion that there are problems inherently associated with this aging process. This does not have to be the case. Starting Pilates’ Method exercise program is much like investing money for your retirement. Strong bones and muscles, a long strengthened nervous system, good posture, positive attitude and freedom of movement can be worth more to you because of the improvement to the quality of your life. When we are sick and don't feel well, we realize that our health is everything. When we are young and healthy, we feel that we will have that health for a lifetime. Pilates’ Method trains you to experience the second half of your life with quality and may add to the quantity of years with a sense of vitality and aliveness. This is something that cannot be bought, you must train before the need is there. Like the farmer who must plant his crop to reap the harvest, you must start your exercise program so you can reap the benefits later.
